After winning the most recent state election, radio host Baryl Vanneihsangi, who has a sizable Instagram following, was elected as Mizoram’s youngest legislator. With 1,414 votes, the 32-year-old Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) member won the Aizawl South-III constituency.

The ZPM, the newest political party in Mizoram, defeated the Mizo National Front (MNF) by capturing 27 of the 40 seats in the election.

Having garnered over 252k followers on Instagram, Baryl Vanneihsangi is a well-known figure in Mizoram assembly politics as one of the three women elected.

The former TV host strongly advocated for gender equality and exhorted women to follow their passions shortly after the Mizoram results.

I just want to let all the women out there know that we pursue anything we want because of our gender. We are nevertheless able to pursue our passions despite it. She told the news agency, “My message to them is that they should just go for it if they want to take something, “regardless of the community or social class they belong to.

Ms. Vanneihsangi graduated with a master’s degree in the arts from Shillong’s North Eastern Hill University. She had previously worked for the Aizawl Municipal Corporation as a corporator.

Just sixteen of the 174 candidates running in the Mizoram election were female. Of them, two ran in two constituencies each, for a total of eighteen seats in the assembly elections held by women candidates.

On November 4, the results of the Mizoram Assembly Elections 2023 were declared. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) defeated the Mizo National Front (MNF), led by Zoramthanga, by winning 27 seats. MNF secured 10 seats, while the Bhartiya Janta Party only managed to win 2.
