Freelance journalist Mandeep Punia granted bail

New Delhi: Freelance journalist Mandeep Punia, arrested during the farmers’ agitation, got bail on Tuesday. He has been granted bail by the Rohini Court of Delhi on a personal bond of 25 thousand. Mandeep was arrested by the police from the Singhu Border Farmer demonstration site.

The police arrested Mandeep Punia on the basis of an FIR registered under various sections including sections 186, 353 and 332 of IPC. There was strong opposition by journalists and a demonstration was held at the Delhi Police Office. During the hearing, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Satveer Singh Lamba observed that the complainants, victims and witnesses are all police personnel. The judge said, “Therefore, there is no possibility that the accused can influence any police officer.”

Mandeep Punia, who did freelance journalism for The Caravan magazine, was covering farmers’ protests on the Singhu border. He was then taken into custody by the court for fourteen days after the Delhi Police detained him for allegedly misbehaving with an officer at the protest site.
