Date:

News Desk – Khaleda Zia, a former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, is about to be released from prison but who is she? let’ know.

Who is Khaleda Zia?

Background: Khaleda was born in Jalpaiguri, which was part of India before it was divided. Her husband, Lt Gen Ziaur Rehman, was once the President of Bangladesh. He was killed in 1981.

Rise to Power: Khaleda became Bangladesh’s first female prime minister in 1991. She led her country during a very unstable time and didn’t have a full majority in government, so she needed support from another party, Jamaa-e-Islami.

Challenges: She won her second term in 1996, but it was very short (only 12 days) because the elections were boycotted by other parties, including the Awami League.

Return and Arrest: She came back to power in 2001 leading a coalition of four parties and then stepped down in 2006. A year later, she was arrested over corruption charges.

Conviction: In 2018, she was found guilty of corruption and sentenced to 17 years in jail. While in jail, she has been very ill and spent a lot of time in the hospital.

Country’s Turmoil: Recently, the government led by her rival, Sheikh Hasina, fell. Hasina has left the country after protests, and now there’s talk about setting up a temporary government.

Khaleda Zia’s release comes at a critical time, and she might try to become a leader again.
