News Desk – Dense fog disrupted air and rail travel across the national capital on Monday morning, forcing the cancellation of dozens of flights and delaying train services by several hours as visibility dropped to near zero in many parts of Delhi-NCR.
At least 40 flights were cancelled at Indira Gandhi International Airport, while several others were delayed as airlines suspended operations during the early hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for fog, urging residents to remain cautious. The minimum temperature in the city dipped to around 12 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.
The weather conditions worsened an already severe air pollution crisis. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped into the “Severe Plus” category, crossing 456. Ashok Vihar recorded an AQI of 500 in the early hours. Readings from Anand Vihar and Akshardham stood at 493, while Dwarka reported an AQI of 469. Neighbouring Noida also recorded hazardous air, with the AQI at 454.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick smog engulfing large parts of Delhi-NCR, making driving conditions extremely dangerous during the morning rush.
Airlines issued multiple advisories as operations were hit. Air India said poor visibility had affected flight operations across carriers, leading to cancellations as a safety measure. IndiGo warned passengers of delays and proactive cancellations to avoid extended waiting times at airports. SpiceJet also reported disruptions to arrivals and departures due to bad weather.
Delhi Airport advised passengers to check flight status with their airlines before heading to the airport, warning of possible delays.
Rail movement was also impacted. Indian Railways said around 60 trains in the Delhi Division were delayed, some by several hours.
Health experts, speaking to PTI, cautioned against outdoor activity amid toxic air conditions, advising people to avoid morning walks, step out only if necessary, and use masks to reduce health risks.
