NationalBig Discounts as GST 2.0 Rolls Out Tonight

Date:

News Desk – From midnight on September 22, GST 2.0 comes into effect, bringing price cuts on over 375 everyday goods. Companies have already started slashing prices and offering discounts, and more are expected to follow starting Monday.

The government has made it clear corporates must pass on the benefits of lower GST to customers. Finance Ministry officials will be tracking monthly prices to ensure compliance.

FMCG and Food Products Get Cheaper

Paneer: Amul and Mother Dairy have cut prices of a 200gm pack to ₹92, down 3%.

Milk (cartons): Mother Dairy’s 1 litre carton now ₹75 (earlier ₹77); Amul Gold carton now ₹80 (earlier ₹83).

Butter & Cheese: 6% cheaper as GST drops from 12% to 5%.

Pringles Chips: 12% cheaper, now ₹110 for a 107gm pack.

Cornflakes: Kellogg’s original (900gm) now ₹355, down 11%.

Biscuits: Sunfeast Marie Light (1kg pack) now 12% cheaper.

Ice Creams: Mother Dairy’s basic vanilla cup (50ml) now ₹9, down from ₹10.

Personal Care Products

Shampoo, soap, hair oil, and toothpaste are all 11-13% cheaper, with brands like L’Oréal, Himalaya, Close-Up, and Dove cutting rates.

Big-Ticket Items

Cement: Price cut by ~10% as GST reduced to 18% from 28%.

Insurance: Health and life premiums exempt from 18% GST, cutting annual costs by up to 15%.

Durables: Whirlpool ACs cheaper by ₹4,500–₹5,200; dishwashers by ₹3,200–₹4,300.

Cars: Maruti Suzuki has cut prices by ₹46,000 to ₹1.29 lakh depending on the model. Small cars now taxed at 18% instead of 28% + cess.

Economists say these cuts will boost consumer demand and lower inflation, giving households more money to save or spend. However, car dealers and some small businesses worry about losses due to tax already paid on stock purchased before the cuts.

Still, for everyday consumers, GST 2.0 means cheaper groceries, personal care products, appliances, and even cars a real festive season bonus.
