New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech laid emphasis on women’s dignity, but just a day after his appeal to people for it from the Red Fort, a woman was stripped of and bashed up in Delhi. The police said that the woman who was working at a businessman’s house as domestic help was tortured in a naked state on the pretext of exposing her hands in an alleged theft case through black magic.

When the hapless woman tried to end her life by consuming some poisonous substances, the incident came to light. She was admitted to a hospital. Her condition is stable, doctors said. The incident took place in South Delhi under Maidan Garhi police station. The police registered a case against the culprits under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. In her statement, the woman said that she and her husband work for the family. Her husband is a security guard there. Some stole jewellery and a few expensive items from the house ten months ago.

The case, however, remained unsolved, so the woman owner of the house called a Tantrik on August 9 to track down the thief. The sorcerer gave rice mixed with lime (Chuna) and asked all the servants of the house to eat it saying, “The one whose mouth becomes red is the culprit.”   As her mouth turned red, she was taken to a room, stripped of clothes and beaten up. She was forced to confess the crime. Because of severe torture, she said that the ornaments were kept in her house in the village, but when the family members of businessman went there with her husband, they found nothing there. Meanwhile, she took poison meant for killing rat to commit suicide, the police said.
