
New Delhi: Police arrested JNU alumnus leader Omar Khalid late on Sunday night for his alleged role in the riots in North East Delhi in February 2020. The arrest was made under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Delhi Police’s Special Cell arrested Khalid after an 11-hour-long interrogation. Today he will be presented in court.
Earlier also, the police had registered a case against Omar Khalid under the Unlawful Activities (Prohibition) Act (UAPA) in another case related to the riots. Earlier in September this year, Khalid was also questioned by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on 2 September in connection with the communal riots in north-east Delhi. According to reports, his mobile phone has been confiscated by the police.
It is noteworthy that on 23 February this year, there were communal riots in North East Delhi. In this riot 53 people were killed and about 200 people were injured. During this period, two Delhi Police soldiers also lost their lives.
