Srinagar: A group of militants allegedly shot dead a Kashmiri Pandit in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, official sources said. According to deputy inspector general of police Sujit Kumar, a militant outfit, called Kashmir Freedom Fighter (KFF), has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Kashmiri Pandit identified as Puran Krishan Bhat was attacked near his residence in the Chowdhary Gund area of south Kashmir district. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead. The area has been cordoned off.

On the heels of the killing of Puran Krishan, hundreds of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, who have been seeking their relocation from the valley, blocked the Jammu-Akhnoor road to protest the killing of the members of their community.

The Pandits, employed under the Prime Minister’s employment package, have a sit-in protesting outside the office of relief commissioner in Jammu and Kashmir for the past five months after the killing of one of the members of their community, Rahul Bhat.

As the news of the latest killing of Kashmiri Pandit broke out, the angry people of the community went to the protest site and blocked the highway. They were raising slogans against the government the terrorists.

The situation in the valley is not safe for the Kashmiri Pandits, but this government remains silent on the issue, said a protester, Nikhil Kaul. The latest killing in the valley exposed the government claim, the protesters said.
