Opposition Calls for Bandh in Pondicherry

The Secular Democratic Alliance (SDA), which is led by Congress, has called for a bandh in the Union Territory on Monday to protest the State Election Commission’s ‘bungling’ in its civic poll notification, which revoked reservation for Backward Classes and Scheduled Tribes, and demanded that the SEC be replaced.

The gathering was outraged by the SEC’s “bungling” in rescinding reservation for BCs and SCs in municipal wards and offices, as well as in municipal and commune panchayat offices.

According to the resolution, the AINRC-BJP coalition government led by N Rangasamy is equally to blame for the SEC’s ‘confusion’ in conducting the elections. The meeting also called for the State Election Commissioner to be replaced.

Speaker R Selvam chaired a combined meeting of legislators and ministers on Saturday, in which they urged Lt Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to intervene and correct the ‘anomalies’ the SEC had committed, as well as take ‘necessary’ action against the Commissioner. The meeting objected to the SEC’s removal of reservation in proposed civic body elections for BCs and STs through resolutions.
