The National Investigation Agency has challenged lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj’s bail in the Koregaon-Bhima case in the Supreme Court (NIA). Sudha Bharadwaj, who has been in prison since 2018, was granted default bail on Wednesday by the Bombay High Court, which ruled that a court that continued the inquiry against her and prolonged her imprisonment lacked jurisdiction. The ruling, issued by Justices SS Shinde and NJ Jamadar, did, however, ask a Mumbai special NIA court to hear the case on December 8 and decide on her bail terms and release date.

The Koregaon-Bhima case stems from allegedly inflammatory comments spoken at an Elgar Parishad conference in Pune on December 31, 2017, which allegedly sparked rioting the next day outside the Koregaon-Bhima war monument on Pune’s outskirts, according to the police. The conclave was allegedly backed by Maoists, according to the Pune police. The investigation into the matter was ultimately handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

All of the others are being held as undertrials. She is Secretary-General of the People’s Coalition for Civil Liberty (PUCL) in Chhattisgarh and a member of the Women Against Sexual Violence and State Oppression (WSS).
