Kolkata: A man in West Bengal chopped off his wife’s hand from the wrist to prevent her from joining a nursing job offered by the state government, sources said on Monday. The man acted savagely because of jealousy and inferiority complex, the police said.

The man Sher Mohammod who committed the crime is a resident of Ketugram in East Burdwan district. His wife is Renu Khatun. The brute then took his wife to a local hospital on Monday morning concealing the chopped parts of her hands at his house, so that the doctors may not reattach them.
Once Sher Mohammod admitted his wife to the hospital, he ran away. His family members, too, went into hiding. Local residents told the police that Renu was undergoing nursing training and working as an assistant in a private hospital at an industrial township in Durgapur. She recently got a job offer from the state government, and that was the bone of contention between them.
Locals said that Sher Mohammod was jobless and feared that once Khatun got a government job, she would leave him, which spawned frequent fights between them. Sher Mohammod asked his wife to reject the job offer, but Renu stuck to her guns.
On Monday, when both of them were fighting over the issue, the husband of Renu chopped off her hand from the wrist. Her elder brother Ripon Sekh said that just after her sister had got the state appointment letter, her husband insisted that she should reject it.

Ripon further said that Renu who longed for pursuing a nursing career did not agree with her husband, but nobody in the family knew that the feeling of insecurity would turn into a tragedy.
