NationalKC Venugopal off to Delhi after Sonia’s call

Date:

Alappuzha (Kerala)/New Delhi: At a time when the state Congress committees of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and other places have passed resolutions urging Rahul Gandhi to become the president of the party, the contest for the top job of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) is imminent. Former president of the party and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has already said that he will not take over the mantle.

Venugopal was called to Delhi after Congress leader Shashi Tharoor met Sonia Gandhi at her residence on Monday, Congress leader KC Venugopal, who was taking part in the Kerala leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Alappuzha, left for Delhi on Tuesday. Party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi called him to the national capital, sources in the Congress said.

Sonia Gandhi reportedly asked Venugopal to come to Delhi to discuss the issues related to the organisation. This is for the first time that he left the Yatra since it began on September 7 from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The Congress presidential poll is set to take place on October 17.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot might contest the election. Gehlot, however, said that he was trying to persuade Rahul Gandhi to take over as party president.

According to reports, Sonia Gandhi gave her nod to Shashi Tharoor who wanted to contest the upcoming election to the post party president. Sonia Gandhi said that anyone could contest the election if he wanted. Therefore, both Gehlot and Tharoor appear to be strong contenders for the post of Congress president.
