Hundreds of Mahindra Thar and Toyota Fortuner owners came together in Daman for a road-safety campaign with a simple message — “Bhaigiri nahi, zimmedaari”, or “Not a show of power, but responsibility”.
The event, organised on September 9, encouraged owners of the powerful SUVs to pledge to drive responsibly and avoid rash or intimidating behaviour on the road.
District Collector of Daman Saurabh Mishra administered the road-safety pledge to participants during the campaign.
The Department of Information and Publicity of Daman also shared a video from the event on its official X account.
Hundreds of SUVs Join ‘Sankalp Yatra’
The campaign, titled “Thar-Fortuner Sankalp Yatra”, saw hundreds of Thar and Fortuner SUVs gather at a parking area in Daman.
Participants assembled in groups and held yellow placards carrying road-safety messages.
The campaign focused on slogans such as “Not speed, but culture” and “Not show-off, but responsibility”, urging SUV owners to associate powerful vehicles with disciplined and responsible driving rather than rashness or displays of dominance.
The initiative was also linked to Mahindra’s #TharKaMatlabZimmedari road-safety campaign, with Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra tagged in the social media post.
Campaign Sparks Discussion Online
The sight of a large number of Thar and Fortuner owners coming together specifically for a road-safety campaign triggered discussion on social media.
Some users suggested that technology should be used more effectively to track traffic violations.
They argued that vehicles belonging to repeat offenders should be seized in cases involving violations such as driving on footpaths, moving on the wrong side of the road or making dangerous turns.
Others called for stricter enforcement of driving licence requirements and tougher penalties for reckless driving.
Another section of users said authorities should consistently implement the Motor Vehicles Act and take action against offenders according to the law.
According to them, stricter enforcement could help discourage dangerous driving behaviour.
‘Powerful Vehicle Should Mean Greater Responsibility’
The campaign sought to change the way powerful SUVs are perceived on the road.
For a vehicle category that is often discussed online in connection with aggressive or reckless driving, the Sankalp Yatra delivered a direct message owning a powerful SUV should come with an equally strong sense of responsibility behind the wheel.
