Thiruvananthapuram: Former health minister of Kerala and a member of the central wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Shailaja declined Magsaysay Award for 2022, sources said. She said that she was considered for the award, but she declined it because of the party’s decision. She was selected for the award for her performance as health minister of Kerala in dealing with Nipah and covid-19, sources further said. The award is given in the name of former president of Philippines Ramon Magsaysay who was anti-communist.

The former health minister said it should be seen as denial of an honour. She said that it was an honour for the entire state.
