New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claim that the number of incidents of crime against women has declined during its rule in different states has fallen flat after the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) said that there was a significant rise in crimes against women and children in 2021. According to the latest data released by NCRB, 4, 28, 278 cases of crime against women were registered last year, showing an increase of 15.3% over the figure of 2020, which was 3, 71, 503.

 Majority of cases under crime against women were registered under “Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives (31.8%).” This was followed by assault on Women with intent to outrage her modesty (20.8%), kidnapping and abduction of women (17.6%) and rape (7.4%). The crime rate registered among one hundred thousand women was 64.5% last year and it was 56.5% in 2020.

Similarly, 1, 49, 404 cases of crime against children were registered last year, showing an increase of 62.2% over 2020 when 1,28,531 cases were registered.
