New Delhi: After a long time, the Congress leaders, wearing black clothes, took to streets across the country on Friday, protesting against price rise, inflation, hike in Goods and Services Tax (GST) and unemployment. Party’s Member of Parliament (MP) from Wayanad (Kerala) Rahul Gandhi, its leader Priyanka Gandhi and many more leaders were detained outside Parliament. They were going to the President’s house. Many Congress workers were detained outside the AICC headquarters. The march towards the President’s house was part of the party’s nation-wide protest.  In many state capitals across the country, they planned to march to the Governor’s house, demanding rollback hike in GST. Party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi stood with women MPs holding banners outside the gate number of Parliament. The Delhi police, however, prevented the protesters from moving towards Rashtrapati Bhawan. Several MPs were detained at Vijay Chowk.

KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi were among 64 MPs who were detained and taken away from Vijay Chowk. Rahul Gandhi continued to tear into Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said to media persons, “We are here to raise the issue of price rise; democracy is being murdered.” About whether the MPs were manhandled, Rahul Gandhi replied in affirmative. He said, “Our job is to resist these forces; our job is to ensure that democracy in India is protected; our job is to raise the issues of people. We are doing that.”

He said that some of the MPs were beaten up. Party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi also staged a sit-in outside the AICC headquarters. Crossing the police barricades outside the party headquarters, she squatted on the road. Meanwhile, in a tweet, party’s general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Again today, Congress MPs denied democratic right to protest against price rise, unemployment, GST hike. Bundled into police vans at Vijay Chowk. It’s clear, only those who are afraid try to instill fear!” In the morning, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot reached the party headquarters.
