New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Thursday set up an all-woman bench comprising Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Bela M Trivedi to hear transfer petitions involving marital disputes and bail issues.
This has been the third occasion in the history of the Supreme Court that an all-woman bench has been constituted.
The two-judge bench is currently sitting in court number 11 of the apex court. There are 32 cases before the bench.
The first all-woman bench was set up in 2013. A bench comprising Justices Gyan Sudha Mishra and Ranjana Prakash Desai was set up. Then, a bench comprising Justice R Banumathi and Justice Indira Banerjee was formed in 2018.
There are three women judges in the top court at present including Justice Hima Kohli, Justice B V Nagarathna, and Justice Bela M Trivedi. Justice Nagarathna is set to take over as Chief Justice in 2027.
