Civil services candidature case hearing in Supreme Court adjourned for six weeks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred for six weeks the hearing of a petition challenging the cancellation of the candidature of a candidate for the Civil Services Examination.

A division bench headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said it has been informed by a letter that the talks between the parties concerned to settle the matter are in the final stages. Therefore, the hearing of the matter is adjourned for six weeks.

The petition said that the requisite proof of educational qualification was not produced as per the Civil Services Examination Rules, 2020 due to which his candidature has been cancelled. At the same time, in this case, UPSC had said in the last hearing that Corona cannot be an excuse for not submitting the certificate on time. Also, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) had said that the eligibility relaxation cannot be given to different candidates on different grounds.

Significantly, during the last hearing, the Commission had opposed the petitions filed by some civil service candidates whose candidature was canceled on the ground that they did not produce the requisite proof of educational qualification under Rule 7 and Rule 11 of the Civil Services.
