New Delhi: Release of the violators of Bilkis Bano from jail in Gujarat has triggered criticism from different corners across the country. Former Union Home Minister P Chadambaram on Thursday wanted to know whether the Gujarat government had consulted the Central Government before taking such a decision, because the Central Bureau of Investigation was the probe agency in the case.

The 11 convicts, sentenced to life imprisonment by a special CBI court onJanuary 21, 2008 for gang-raping Bilkis Bano and murdering seven members of her family, walked out of Godhra sub-jail on Monday. The Gujarat government took the decision according to the remission policy.

According to reports, the convicts had served more than 15 years in jail and one of them had approached the Supreme Court with a plea for premature release, to which the apex court had directed the Gujarat government to look into the issue of remission.
