Rewa (MP): A group of 20 people, including Mandal president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), attacked the chief executive officer (CEO) of a Janpad Panchayat in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, official sources said on Wednesday. After the attack, the CEO who suffered severe injuries was rushed to a hospital. The police registered a case against 20 people in connection with the incident. The attack took place immediately after an audio clip of a heated telephonic exchange between the CEO and a BJP legislator KP Tripathi went viral on social media. Tripathi, however, denied his hand in the incident.

According to district collector Manoj Pushjp, CEO of Sirmaur Janpad Panchayat SK Mishra suffered serious injuries in the attack. The group assaulted Mishra when he was returning to office after holding a meeting at Basman Mama cow sanctuary. It is nearly 40km from the district headquarters.

The police registered a case against 20 people, including BJP’s Mandal president Manish Shukla, the district said, adding that the official was sent to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. The audio clip of the heated exchange between legislator Tripathi and Mishra went viral on WhatsApp. The legislator was heard threatening the officer for some pending work. Tripathi, however, dismissed the allegations as a political conspiracy to defame him.
