Srinagar: The army personnel bade adieu to their friend, a dog named Axel, with tearful eyes. Axel died a hero’s death. Axel, a member of the Indian army, laid down his life during an anti-militancy operation in Baramulla district on Saturday, sources said on Sunday. A wreath-laying ceremony was held in his honour.
Part of the 26 Army Dog Unit, Axel carried the number ‘74B7’ when he was serving the army. Aside from Axel, a militant was killed in the encounter at Wanigam Bala in Kreeri. Two security personnel suffered injuries in the gunfight.

In a tweet, the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps tweeted with a file photo of the dog saying, “Thank you for your Service Axel.” “#ChinarCorps salutes the valour & sacrifice of Army Dog No 74B7 AXEL (Aslt Canine) who laid down his life in the line of duty in Op Wanigambala #Baramulla on 30 Jul 22,” the Army tweet said. As soon as the news and the picture of the dog went viral on social media, many people paid tributes to Axel.
