Bhopal: A man lost his life after a wall of a polling booth caved in on Saturday when the first phase of the three-tier Panchayat elections began, official sources said. The man identified as Raja Kushwaha was sitting at a polling booth at Tikha village in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors said he was brought dead.

According to reports from different parts of the state, when voting for the first phase was underway, a few minor incidents of violence erupted at some polling booths in the Gwalior-Chambal region and in Damoh. In the incident that occurred in Damoh district, a sub-inspector suffered injuries when two groups clashed with each other at a polling station. When sub-inspector Inderjeet Choudhary, who was on duty at a polling booth, pushed a voter out of the queue, some villagers got angry and they created a ruckus.

Additional police men were called to the spot to bring the situation under control. Sources in the state election commission said that 52,000 policemen were deployed at different booths across the state to organise free and fair elections.
