14 accused got bail in Palghar mob lynching case, 18 rejected

Thane: The district court of Thane on Tuesday granted bail to 14 accused arrested in connection with the murder of two sadhus in a mob lynching case in Palghar district of Maharashtra in April 2020. Advocate Amrit Adhikari said that Additional Sessions Court (Special Designated Court) Judge RS Gupta rejected the bail applications of 18 other accused.

The court fixed July 30 as the next date of hearing when the charges are expected to be framed. A total of 201 people were arrested in this case, out of which 75 are the main accused. Special Public Prosecutor Satish Maneshinde is representing the prosecution, while Advocate P N Ojha is representing the family of the sadhus.

On April 16, 2020, a mob lynched Chikne Maharaj Kalpavrikshagiri and Sushilgiri Maharaj and their driver Nilesh Telgade to death at Gadchinchle in Palghar district, 140 km north of Mumbai. The brutal attack took place amid rumors that child-lifters are roaming the area during the lockdown. Earlier the chargesheet was filed in Thane court.
