Mahashivratri 2022: Mahashivratri, a Hindu festival devoted to Lord Shiva that takes place every year in the month of Magha. Devotees of Lord Shiva swarm the temples and fast for the duration of the Hindu festival, which begins in the morning and ends the next day. This year Mahashivratri is on March 1.

Fasting preparation begins a day ahead of time, when devotees mentally prepare themselves by eating sattvic cuisine and leading a stress-free life.
Here are some Mahashivratri Vrat Dos and Don’ts to remember on the day of the fast:
Dos of Mahashivratri
- On the day of the fast, one should get up two hours before sunrise, which is also known as Brahma Muhurta.
- After walking up, take a bath and dress in clean, preferably white, clothes. Then a sankalp is made to observe the entire day with dedication and devotion. They can perform sankalp by putting rice and water in their palms.
- People with particular health issues or who are taking medication should see their doctor before beginning the fast.
- Those who are fasting are urged to say ‘Om Namah Shivay’ numerous times during the day.
- On Shivaratri day, devotees should take a second bath before doing shiv puja in the evening. Shiva puja should be performed at night, and worshippers should break their fast after taking a bath the next day.
- During the puja, milk, datura flower, Belpatra, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, honey, ghee, and sugar should be served to Shivling.
- According to Drikpanchang, devotees should break their fast between daybreak and the conclusion of Chaturdashi Tithi to get the most out of the Vrat.

Don’ts of the Mahashivratri
- During the fast, it is completely forbidden to ingest meals made of wheat, rice, or pulses.
- Non-vegetarian foods, garlic, and onion should be avoided as well.
- Coconut water should not be offered to Shivling.
