Akshaya Tritiya is also regarded as Akti or Akha Teej. It is a yearly festival that appears in the spring season celebrated by the Hindus and the Jains. The festival is said to be an auspicious day to denote never-ending prosperity. Akshayya word in Sanskrit means never-endings in the context of hope, happiness, success, and prosperity. Tritiya in Sanskrit means the third phase of the moon, hence the festival is named after the third lunar day of the Vaishakha month in the Hindu calendar.
Akshaya Tritiya has been acknowledged as a hopeful day for fixing marriages, starting new businesses, buying quite costly items in the form of gold or property or it can be a start of any new beginning in life. It is also a day to remember the loved ones who have died. Some people also observe the day to pray for the well-being of their husbands or to-be husbands.
After praying to God, people distribute sprouts, fresh fruits, sweets. They also do charitable work and observe fast. There are many legendary stories related to the festival. Sharing below one important one.
It is believed that on this day Lord Krishna made the Akshaya Patra bowl powerful for Draupadi who is the wife of five Pandavas in Mahabharata. It is said that once while the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi were completing their exile in the forests, the saint Durvasa and his group of saints arrived to get food at Draupadi’s house. It so happened that the Pandavas and Draupadi were having their food before Durvasa’s arrival and hence, the food was almost over. As there was a lack of food and it was difficult to say no to the saints as it would be a sign of disrespect, Draupadi prayed to Lord Krishna who came to her assistance and made the magical bowl Akshaya Patram full of food to serve meals to the saints. It is believed that the magical bowl will always remain full of food of choice and if required it can even serve food to the whole universe.
We wish all a very Happy Akshaya Tritiya 2021!
