I read a quote somewhere on the internet which says, there is a solution for every need at all times but there is no solution for greed. I started my career with a small salary of Rs. 4000/- in May 2010. As years passed by, my salary increased to a good one which helped me make good savings for my marriage. My parents belonged to a middle-class income household and the place where I have got married is also the same income level.

It happened so that my father and father-in-law used to work in the same office and were good friends. So, when I went after marriage to my in-law’s house, I somewhat had the same kind of spending and living habits. Each item that we purchase has a record in a book maintained by my father-in-law. He would always have a financial discussion with us at the end of the day about expenses were quite less in the olden days and salary was also less.

According to him, the simpler we live, the longer we can sustain any sort of economic changes that may or may not happen over a period of time. He believed that having two pairs of pants and shirts were enough for a common man to do his daily life activities. He had a separate set of dhotis and shirts to wear on special occasions and festivals. He didn’t force us to adopt a similar lifestyle but he would always suggest spending less and save more.
So, when I got a well-paying job after my marriage, he would ask me to save all of the money in fixed deposits on a half-yearly basis. He would say that when money is left in the bank just like that, we would get temptations to buy new stuff and think whatever we have is outdated or old. Hats off to my parents and in-laws who have inculcated the savings habit in me as it is helping me in this testing times of pandemic.
