Martyrs’ Day: Know the Significance

Every year on January 30th, India commemorates Martyrs’ Day, or ‘Shaheed Diwas,’ to commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the nation’s father, and to pay tribute to the freedom fighters and warriors who gave their lives for their Motherland.

On January 30th, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was killed in the Birla House by Nathuram Godse after his evening prayers.

History of this day

Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as the Father of the Nation, was an anti-colonial patriot who led a successful movement for India’s independence from British domination via nonviolent resistance. He fighted for civil rights and freedom, as well as strengthening the nation’s cohesiveness while inaugurating the worldwide campaigns .

On January 30, 1948, Nathuram Godse assassinated him. On this day, India honours his contribution to the country’s independence. The federal government has ordered that all states and UTs observe two minutes of silence on January 30.

However, on March 23 of each year, the country commemorates Martyrs’ Day to honour the independence fighters Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar, who were hanged by the British on that particular day in 1931.
