1) “You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”

Meaning: We as human beings work to fulfilling the goals of other people’s lives throughout our journey. When we are born, we are expected to be disciplined children who can support their parents. When we go to the office, we are expected to be a productive workforce to attain company growth. When we get married, we are expected to fulfill marital and societal responsibilities. However, in this journey, we decide to give love and affection to all the others whom we meet in the lifespan but we forget the most important person and that is OURSELVES. Buddha says that as we do our duties for others, we should also care for ourselves and keep loving ourselves as well in the process.

2) “A jug fills drop by drop.”

Meaning: Lord Buddha gave the example of a jug how it is filled by adding droplets of water. Same way, a jug can be compared to your bank balance in which you can save money only in installments. Unless you win a crore rupees lottery and your bank is flooded with a huge amount. Similarly, raising a good child requires efforts on a consistent basis. You cannot expect your child to act kindly if you don’t feed him or her with the right love and affection being given on a daily basis.

3) “Work out your own salvation. Do not depend on others.”

Meaning: We usually think that we cannot live alone and have to depend on others when we retire or get old. But that’s not the reality. You really need no one in life if you know to create a unique connection with your inner self i.e. God. You can keep working in your different stages of life without expecting others to help you when you need it the most.

4) “To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance.”

Meaning: In order to live in an unselfish manner, one has to own nothing as his own even if he has an abundance. Since we live in a materialistic world, let us take the example of property and wealth. If you create a home of your own in your name and think that it is ONLY your home and only you have the decision-making power etc. then you will end up living alone. However, if you build a home and think of it as a shelter for people in need and anyone related to you, you have cleansed yourself from selfishness completely and are walking towards the path of selflessness.
