SII to produce up to 10 crore doses of corona vaccine

New Delhi: The Serum Institute of India (SII) has said that it will produce up to 10 crore additional doses of covid19 vaccine for India and low and middle income countries in 2021. This announcement takes forward the collaboration between SII, Vaccine Alliance Gavi and the Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation. In August, the Serum Institute said that with this collaboration, it will deliver up to 10 million doses of Kovid 19 vaccine.

The company said in the statement that after the new announcement, the company will now deliver safe and effective dose of covid19 vaccine up to 20 crores through global partnership. The maximum cost of the vaccine will be US $ 3 per dose. Serum Institute has said that if all goes well, delivery of covid19 vaccine will start in the first half of 2021 (until June).

The statement said that the collaboration between SII, Vaccine Alliance Gavi and the Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation will provide upfront capital to SII, which will help the Serum Institute to increase the manufacturing capacity of Candidate Coronavirus Vaccines. The dose will be distributed after the vaccine / vaccine receives regulatory approvals and WHO prequalification.

The Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation will provide $ 150 million at risk funding to Gavi through its Strategic Investment Fund. After this, the total funding provided through cooperation will reach $ 300 million. The fund will be used to help the Serum Institute create potential COVID-19 vaccine candidates through Gavi’s COVAX AMC, and to purchase vaccines in the future for India and low and middle income countries.
