Warmest year for India is none other than 2021

As per the information titled Annual Climate Statement 2021 published by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, the year 2021 was the fifth warmest year for the country in the last 121 years. The other four years are 2016, 2009, 2017, and 2010. The information comes at a time when the world is going through a huge climate crisis across the world.

According to the IMD report, the mean air temperature in 2021 was 0.44 degrees Celsius, which is above normal. In the last 121 years between 1901 and last year, the mean temperature has risen by 0.63 degrees Celsius that is above normal.

The scientists at the IMD say that warm winter and the post-monsoon period in 2021 have led to the rise in the mean temperature last year. The data clearly shows how there has been an increase in the yearly rainfall last year and 105% of its long-period average (LPA). Also, the northeast monsoon season witnessed rainfall at 171% of the LPA- which is the highest record since 1901.

At least 780 people were killed in various parts of the country due to thunderstorms and lightning last year and also 750 people lost their lives due to huge rainfall and flood-related accidents. Unfortunately, there were five cyclonic storms in 2021 – Tauktae over the Arabian Sea (May 14-19); Yaas over the Bay of Bengal (May 23-28); Shaheen over the Arabian Sea (September 29-October 4); Gulab over the Bay of Bengal (September 24-28) and most newly, Jawad over the Bay of Bengal (December 2-6).

In such situations when we face a global climate crisis, it is important to take care of our health at all times. Health is wealth after all and without the same, we cannot survive longer and lead a happy life. So, take care of your wellness and ensure your healthy habits help you take proper decisions for your overall life.
