Uttarakhand: In June-July last year, scientists feared the busting of the glacier

New Delhi: After the devastation caused by a glacier burst in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, it has been revealed that scientists of the Wadia Geological Institute located in Dehradun conducted a study in the month of June-July last year, covering the entire Himalayan including Karakoram in Jammu and Kashmir. A warning was issued by the glaciers in the area to stop the flow of rivers and the dangers of the lake created by it.

In 2019, a report was released by scientists with the help of satellite imagery, digital models, British documents, field studies in the ice dam, Outbust Flood and Movement Heterogeneity of Glacier. During this period, a total of 146 lake outbust incidents were detected and analyzed. Research found that glaciers in almost all the valleys of the Himalayan region are melting rapidly.

Scientists had told that there are such glaciers in Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and many areas of Himachal that can burst anytime. He gave an example of the Shyok river in the Karakoram range of Jammu and Kashmir in this regard. The flow of the Shyok River is stopped by a glacier. Because of this, a big lake has been built there now. If more water accumulates in the lake, it is likely to burst.

In the glaciers of the Kumdan Group on the upper part of the Shyok River in India, Chong Kumdan blocked the river several times during the 1920s. This led to several incidents of lake breakage during that time. In 2020, the Kaggar, Khurdopin and Sisapar glaciers have created a lake to block the rivers of Karakoram. Due to the sudden bursting of these lakes, there has been considerable loss of life and property in PoK including India.

Scientists have been continuously researching the Himalayas since the 2013 disaster. Researchers have issued a major warning. According to them, lakes formed due to glaciers can cause great danger. The horrific disaster of 2013 is a living example of how a lake explodes. There was a catastrophe of destruction in Uttarakhand.
