Washington: The US Senate on Saturday acquitted former President Donald J. Trump of allegations of inciting violence in the Capitol on January 6. After a four-day hearing against Trump, the 100-member Senate cast 57 votes in favor of impeachment and 43 votes against it. Trump required 10 more votes to prove guilty. Trump was alleged to have instigated the violence that his supporters had committed on January 6 in the US Capitol.
Seven Republican senators voted against Trump in support of impeachment, but the Democratic Party failed to get the 67 votes needed to convict the former president. The Democratic Party has 50 members in the Senate. Trump is the first president in American history to initiate impeachment action twice. He is the first president to face impeachment action after leaving office. Seven senators, including Republican Bill Cassidy, Richard Barr, Mitt Romney, and Susan Collins, voted in favor of impeachment. Trump issued a statement after he was acquitted, saying, “No president has ever had to face it before.”
