Chennai: England defeated India by 227 runs on the fifth day of the first Test match played in Chennai. With this, the visiting team has taken a 1-0 lead in a series of four Test matches. The second match of the series is to be played at the same ground between February 13-17.
Batting first after winning the toss in the match, England scored 578 runs in their first innings. Captain Joe Root scored 218 for the team, while Dominic Sibley scored 87 runs. Apart from these, Ben Stokes contributed 82 runs.
In response, Team India could score only 337 runs in their first innings. With this, England had a lead of 241 runs, which became the basis of India’s defeat. Cheteshwar Pujara scored 73, Rishabh Pant 91 and Washington Sundar 85 for Team India.
England’s team in the second inning was completely bowled in front of Ravichandran Ashwin (61/6). Captain Joe Root scored the highest 40 runs, while 5 batsmen could not even touch the double figures and the visiting team collapsed for 178 runs. With this, India got a target of 420 runs to win.
Team India, chasing a huge target, had taken 5 shocks till the score of 110. After this, captain Virat Kohli tried to handle the team, but could not make more than 72 runs himself and India were reduced to just 192 runs. In the second inning for England, Jack Leach took 4 wickets, while James Anderson took 3 wickets.
