New Delhi: Southwest monsoon is knocked over Kerala. With this, the four-month long rainy season started. “The south-west monsoon has knocked over Kerala,” said Director General of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjaya Mohapatra. The monsoon, which lasts from June to September, accounts for 75 per cent of the country’s rainfall. Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, had announced the onset of monsoon on May 30, but IMD denied that conditions were yet to be made for such an announcement.
Chances of rain in Delhi this week too
Several states of North India including Delhi received light to moderate rain on Sunday (31 May), due to which the area is expected to get a week relief from the heat. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the low pressure area over the Arabian Sea could turn into a cyclonic storm and move towards the upper west coast. Meteorologists have predicted daytime temperatures to be below 40 degrees over the next two days.
