Sajan Prakash Creates History; Becomes First Indian to Join International Swimming League Championship

Sajan Prakash, an Indian swimmer, has been recruited by Paris’s Energy Standard Swim Club, the 2019 International Swimming League champions. Energy Standard is located in Paris, but the squad practices in Gloria Sports Arena in Belek, Turkey, under the direction of English swimmer James Gibson, a former World, European, and Commonwealth champion in the men’s 50m breaststroke category. The chairman of the 30-member squad is South African butterfly champion Chad le Clos, while freestyle and butterfly champion Sarah Sjöström of Sweden is the deputy leader.

Sajan, a 27-year-old Kerala police officer, is unlikely to join the squad right away since he has been receiving rehab at Kerala Institute of Sports Ayurvedic & Research in Thrissur for the past ten days. I should be able to join my squad in November, Sajan added, just in time for playoffs.

Sajan became the first Indian to gain automatic qualification for the Olympics in the men’s 200m butterfly event at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, clocking 1:56.38 seconds. Sajan competed in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after meeting the ‘B’ standard, or universality quota. Sajan had a poor record and recovered at the Phuket, Thailand, Thanyapura Sports & Health Resort. He had been on a FINA scholarship for the previous three to four years before traveling to the Tokyo Olympics.
