The Indian Youth Congress said that a plethora of events, including blood donation camps, sports, and cultural events, will be held throughout the country to commemorate the 77th birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi has the distinction of becoming India’s youngest Prime Minister. At the age of 40, he became Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

He was a pilot by trade, and politics were the last thing on his mind. In the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, Rajiv Gandhi was born to Indira and Feroze Gandhi on August 20, 1944. He was the country’s youngest Prime Minister, serving as the country’s sixth Prime Minister from 1984 until 1989.

Following his brother Sanjay Gandhi’s death in 1980, Rajiv Gandhi was compelled to enter politics after a ten-year career as a commercial pilot for Indian airlines. He ran for the Amethi constituency and won the seat that his brother had previously held in parliament. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, his son Rahul Gandhi ran in the same constituency, Amethi, and was defeated by Smriti Irani.

Rajiv Gandhi served as Prime Minister of India as well as President of the Congress Party. The Congress party earned a majority of 414 seats in the Lok Sabha elections under his leadership, setting a new record for the most seats won by a single party. A suicide bomber was used by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to murder him during a gathering. It happened in 1991, while he was campaigning for the general election.
