New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has suffered a major setback in the civic elections in Punjab amid the farmers’ agitation. Congress has won a big victory in these elections. Six out of the seven municipal bodies have been taken over by the Congress. Along with this, the Shiromani Akali Dal, an ally of the BJP, has also suffered a big loss. Bathinda was occupied by the Shiromani Akali Dal, which has now gone into the Congress court.
The Congress has won in Bathinda after nearly 53 years. This has happened after almost 53 years, when the Congress Party will become the Mayor of Bathinda. Earlier, Shiromani Akali Dal was in possession of Bathinda Municipal Corporation. Significantly, the municipal elections this time are being held in the shadow of the peasant movement. The movement started from Punjab itself against the agricultural laws passed by the Center. The Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP were also strongly opposed here.
According to a report, in the local body elections, Congress has so far won 1,199 out of 1,815 wards (municipal councils) and 281 out of 350 municipal seats. At the same time, Shiromani Akali Dal has won 289 and 33 seats. BJP has won 38 seats of municipal councils and 20 seats of municipal corporation. The Aam Aadmi Part has won 57 and 9 seats.
