Prashant Kishore Attacks Congress for Not Fulfilling Opposition Duties

Prashant Kishor, an election strategist, attacked the Congress on Thursday, saying that while the “idea and space” the party represents is important for a strong Opposition, its leadership is not a “divine right” of an individual, especially when the party has lost over 90% of elections in the last decade. He remarked in a tweet that the Opposition’s leadership should be “chosen democratically.” Congress politician Pawan Khera retaliated within minutes of Kishor’s tweet.

Due to a trust gap, the Congress postponed Kishor’s induction into the party this year. Kishor met with the Congress leadership on several occasions. He initially met Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the spring of 2020. Kishor is suspected of orchestrating a string of defections from the Congress to West Bengal’s governing party. He is credited with helping Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) come to power for the third time this summer.

His attack on the Congress comes a day after Banerjee said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was no longer viable and asked for the opposition parties to band together to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Banerjee did not mention the Congress, but claimed the BJP will “bowl you out” if a party is terrified and its leaders are away from the field. “What is the (Congress-led) United Progressive Alliance?”

Kishor issued a cryptic comment in October concerning the Congress’s reaction to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra‘s visit to Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri following the violence there. After a convoy, which included a car belonging to Union minister Ajay Mishra, crashed into a gathering of protesting farmers, eight persons were killed. “Those expecting a rapid, spontaneous rebirth of the GOP (Grand Old Party or Congress)-led opposition as a result of the #LakhimpurKheri tragedy are in for a severe letdown.” Unfortunately, there are no easy fixes for the GOP’s deep-seated issues and structural flaws,” Kishor tweeted.
