Over 50,000 Farmers to Protest at Azad Maidan

According to farmers’ groups, up to 50,000 farmers are expected to attend the march on Sunday at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, a day before Parliament’s Winter Session begins. They also intend to transfer the ashes of the farmers killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri event on October 3 to the Arabian Sea and immerse them there.

The Centre has announced that the bill to abolish the three problematic farm rules will be submitted on the first day of the forthcoming Parliament session, according to Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait. The law, which was approved by the Union cabinet earlier this week, is set to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday by Union agricultural minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

Meanwhile, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has called a conference for next month to deliberate on its next line of action after suspending its tractor march to Parliament on November 29. Farmers’ groups have already stated that they will not stop protesting until the contested agricultural laws are abolished and all of their demands are granted.

President Ram Nath Kovind signed the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act on September 27, 2020, just days after they were passed unanimously by both houses of Parliament.

Farmers are also planning a ‘Kisaan Majdoor Mahapanchayat,’ where they will debate their demands for all farm-related concerns, including as the MSP for all crops, the Swaminathan report’s implementation, unemployment, and other issues. The Maharashtra Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) administration is also scheduled to attend the protest to pay homage to the victims. “We will participate in the farmers’ demonstration in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan on November 28. No politician, on the other hand, will take the platform “Nawab Malik, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), declared this at a news conference earlier this week.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, eight people were killed, including four farmers, when a speeding SUV, allegedly driven by Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish, rammed into a group of farmers protesting the three new farm laws in front of UP’s deputy chief minister (CM) Keshav Prasad Maurya, resulting in violence. The bill to remove the three problematic agriculture legislation will be filed on the opening day of the 2019 Parliament session, according to the Centre.
