New Italian President’s voting to begin on 24 Jan

On January 24 this year, Italy’s lower chamber of Parliament will be starting to vote for a new president. The campaign will be officially started on the date that will witness Premier Mario Draghi and ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi’s lookout for the reputed role in the country.

The person who will win the election will be selected by nearly 1,000 big electors among lawmakers and regional representatives. The winner in the elections will be replacing President Sergio Mattarella who has worked for seven years and his work-term will be ending on 3 February this year. The voting process may have many rounds that will be spanned over many days.

The presidency in Italy has restricted powers and it is hugely ceremonial. However, we cannot deny the fact that it is the president who plays an important role in resolving political issues that are quite common and frequent in Italy. The election comes at a time just before a new season of the 2023 parliamentary election campaign is to be held.

For the unaware, Mario Draghi is an Italian banker, economist, academic and civil servant. He is the present Prime Minister of Italy since 13 February 2021. He has earlier worked as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2011 to 2019. Draghi was also the Chair of the Financial Stability Board from 2009 to 2011 and Governor of the Bank of Italy from 2006 to 2011.

After a long-term profession as an academic economist in Italy, Draghi also worked for the World Bank, Goldman Sachs, European Council among others. In 2019, after serving as ECB President, he went for private life. However, he was invited by Italian President Sergio Mattarella to set up a government of national unity. Sergio Mattarella has served as the Italian president since 2015. He is an Italian politician, jurist, academic, and lawyer.
