Multiple Congress Goa MLAs Resign as Priyanka Gandhi Visits the State

As the opposition party prepared for a series of meetings chaired by general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday, the Goa Congress faced a flurry of resignations as confusion reigned about its alliance with like-minded parties for the impending elections in the coastal state. On Friday morning, a group of Congress officials from the Porvorim assembly constituency submitted their resignations. The party, which was backed by Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte, said that the Congress was not serious about running in the next assembly elections in early 2022.

Moreno Rebelo, the Congress’s senior leader from South Goa, has resigned in yet another loss for the party. Rebelo states in his resignation letter that he was outraged when the party proclaimed “candidacy” for incumbent Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco “despite his working against the party.” Rebelo is a Curtorim native.

“Aleixo Lourenco, who has not been involved in party activities for the past four and a half years and has only insulted the party leadership and himself, has fought against the official candidate Kurtorim in the recent elections and Zilla Panchayat has been promoted to the current president. At the national convention, the top leaders announced their nominations. After disagreements within the Congress over the nature of its agreement with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) for the assembly elections, a wave of resignations occurred.

P Chidambaram, the AICC’s Goa election in-charge, stated on Thursday that the GFP has just offered assistance to the Congress and refused to call it an alliance at this point. Senior Congress politician Dinesh Gundu Rao, on the other side, has requested that GFP chairman Vijai Sardesai and Chodankar meet on Saturday. We accept the support, said Rahul Gandhi. All other details must be considered in more depth.” During her day-long visit to Goa, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will speak at a number of events and engage with children and women.
