Maharashtra Rains:  Chiplun-Vasishthi river bridge collapses, over 136 people dead and nearly 1 lakh evacuated

Mumbai:It seems to have no relief in sight as heavy rains continue to deluge various Maharashtra districts, bringing the death toll to nearly 136 people due to landslide and flooding. Due to extremely heavy rains rescue operations too+ get affected, IMD has issued a red alert 6 districts of Maharashtra for Pune, Satara, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Kolhapur.

As severe rains continue to pummelled Maharashtra, causing landslides and floods in various districts, more than 100 people have died and thousands have moved to safer areas. In a major damage Chiplun-Vasishthi river bridge collapsed but no causalities related to that was reported as yet.

Meanwhile, Maharastra CM Udhhav Thackery reviewed Mahad since the Konkan region has been hard-hit due to incessant heavy to very heavy rains for several days, leading major rivers in Ratnagiri and Raigad to overflow above the danger mark. The continuous torrential rains have wreaked havoc in the region with nearly 136 people were died and many still missing or get stuck in the collapsed buildings due to landslide. NDRF and even NAVY had been pressed into the service of rescue operations in the state.

Extremely heavy rainfall is defined as more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours. Saturday’s prediction featured a red alert for Ratnagiri and Satara. The intensity of rains will decrease drastically from Sunday onward, according to the IMD.

Many trucks were stuck on a national highway connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru, with the road submerged in some parts, according to a Maharashtra government official.

Meanwhile, state official has told media that as many as 900 villages have been affected due to the heavy downpour in the state. Around 84000 people have been shifted to safer places by SDRF and NDRF rescue teams about hundreds of villages and towns doesn’t have access electricity and drinking water.

According to government officials, rivers are also overflowing in the nearby southern states of Karnataka and Telangana, where officials were keeping an eye on the situation.
