New Delhi: Sonia Gandhi on Friday freed four senior leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, from the responsibility of general secretary post and also restructured the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest policy-making unit.

It is noteworthy that Azad, one of the 23 leaders who wrote letters to Sonia Gandhi for organizational change, has been placed in the CWC with the removal of the post of general secretary. The party has formed a six-member special committee as per the consensus reached in the CWC meeting held on 24 August against the backdrop of the letter dispute.
This committee will support Sonia Gandhi in matters related to the organization and functioning of the party. The special committee consists of AK Antony, Ahmed Patel, Ambika Soni, KC Venugopal, Mukul Wasnik and Randeep Singh Surjewala. Surjewala and Tariq Anwar have been appointed as the new general secretaries of the party.
