NewDelhi: After maintaining their upward trend for the last 24 hours, both the rivers, Ganga and Yamuna crossed their respective danger level marks in Allahabad, today.
Given the consistently increasing water levels and new areas getting inundated, the authorities concerned have started evacuating the affected families from the city’s low-lying areas. All the affected people are being placed in the shelters and flood-relief camps set up for this purpose.
As of 8 am today, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau stood at 85.08 metres, followed by 84.29 metres at Chhatnag. Similarly, the level of Yamuna at Naini was 84.90 metres.

Due to the increased water level, floodwaters have entered several low-lying localities in the city, namely Nevada, Ashok Nagar, Beli gaon, parts of Rajapur, Salori, Bada, and Chota Baghara, Badra and Sanauti, Daraganj, and Nagvasuki, among others. Also, floodwater from the Yamuna has reached Baradari, which is situated along the riverbank at Baluaghat.
Owing to the severe state of affairs, several flood relief camps have been set up by the authorities, for providing food and shelter to the distressed. Relief efforts are presently afoot, with the administration and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) keeping a strict vigil on the flood situation.
Moreover, the Uttar Pradesh government has sounded an alert and advised all the concerned officials to monitor the situation closely.

“We are keeping a close watch on the water level and also helping distressed locals”, Brijesh Kumar Verma, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department has claimed.
No flood-related casualties have been reported in the city, so far. IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some states while the state govt’s in the danger zone have alerted their local administration and disaster management team.
