Court allows Sudha Bharadwaj to lives in Thane

Sudha Bharadwaj, a lawyer and activist who was arrested in the Elgaar Parishad case, was recently granted permission to remain in Thane after filing a plea with the trial court.

One of the jail restrictions imposed by the trial court on Bharadwaj was that she may not live outside of the court’s jurisdiction, which is Mumbai city. Bharadwaj had requested permission to relocate to a friend’s house in Thane due to the high cost of living in Mumbai.

Bharadwaj’s friend filed an affidavit in court, and special judge Dinesh E Kothalikar granted her plea on Thursday, allowing her to stay in Thane rather than Mumbai. As part of her bail conditions, the judge ordered her to report to the Thane police station. It further stated that the investigating agency, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), is free to verify the address.

Last month, the Bombay High Court granted default bail to Bharadwaj, who was detained in 2018.
