Congress Leads in Rajasthan Panchayat Polls

In six districts of Rajasthan, Congress is leading in panchayat elections. The Congress, led by Ashok Gehlot, has won 670 panchayat samiti seats and would most likely constitute the board in four zila parishads. In Bharatpur, Dausa, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, and Sirohi, polling took place on August 26, 29, and September 1 for 200 zila parishad and 1,564 panchayat samiti seats.

According to Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra, the results are promising for his party and a blow for the opposition BJP. The Congress party has secured a landslide victory in the elections. 670 Congress candidates were elected in 1,562 panchayat samiti wards. “In Bharatpur, 171 candidates of the Congress philosophy who ran without a party emblem won the poll,” he added.

Five hundred fifty-one panchayat samiti seats and 88 zila parishad seats were won by the BJP. In Sirohi, it is probable to establish the zila parishad board. Independents won 290 and seven seats, respectively, while the BSP won 11 panchayat samiti and three zila parishad seats.

In Jodhpur, Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, formerly in an alliance with the BJP, also won 40 seats. In the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections held in 21 districts in November and December of last year, the Congress lagged the BJP. Elections have been held in 27 of Rajasthan’s 33 districts.
