Harish Rawat, a prominent Congress politician, declared that Charanjit Singh Channi had been overwhelmingly chosen as the new Punjab Chief Minister. Punjab Congress MLAs have authorized Sonia Gandhi, the party’s president, to appoint a new parliamentary party leader to succeed Amarinder Singh as the state’s chief minister.
This occurred after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh quit, saying he was “humiliated” by how the party handled infighting in the state unit. According to party sources, the new leader’s identity will most likely be revealed during today’s CLP meeting. All Congress MLAs have unanimously recommended Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa as the future Punjab chief minister. Their choice has been relayed to the party’s top command, according to MLA Pritam Kotbhai.

The AICC has also expressed support for the decision. Randhawa is said to have requested time from the Governor to lay claim to the position. The 62-year-old minister, who hails from the Gurdaspur district and has served as a three-time MLA, was the previous cabinet’s Jails and Co-operation Minister. His father, Santokh Singh, was a two-term president of the Punjab Congress, and he has also served as Vice President of the Punjab Congress.
After being overwhelmingly chosen as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Charanjit Singh Channi has been named the next Chief Minister of Punjab. A Dalit candidate for Punjab’s top job may indicate the party’s drive ahead of the province’s 2022 assembly elections, where the Dalit group accounts for around 33% of the population. Mr. Channi previously served as the opposition leader in the Punjab parliament from 2015 to 2016. In March 2017, he was appointed to the Captain Amarinder Singh administration as a minister.
