BJP’s Sarabjit Kaur defeats AAP Anju Katyal and becomes new mayor of Chandigarh

Sarabjit Kaur, a BJP municipal councillor, was elected mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Saturday, defeating Anju Katyal of the Aam Aadmi Party by just one vote in a direct election. There were 28 votes cast out of a total of 36, with seven Congress councillors and one Shiromani Akali Dal councillor abstaining.

Officials said Kaur received 14 votes, Katyal received 13, and one vote was declared invalid. AAP councillors raised a disturbance in the House as the results were announced. The police were dispatched to remove them.

The results of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, announced on December 27, resulted in a hung House, with the AAP winning 14 of the 35 wards and the BJP winning 12. The Congress won eight seats and the Shiromani Akali Dal received one.

Harpreet Kaur Babla, a Congress municipal councillor, joined the BJP days after the election results were announced. In addition to the 35 councillors, the Chandigarh MP, who serves as an ex-officio member of the municipal corporation, has a vote.
