Babul Supriyo, a former Union minister, unexpectedly joined the Trinamool Congress on Saturday, only days after announcing his political retirement. Babul Supriyo was a vocal opponent of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Supremo, and when he announced his departure from politics, he stated that he would not join any other political party.
In the first week of August, Supriyo said that, even after quitting, he will continue working as an MP in Asansol, West Bengal. Babul declared on July 31 that he would leave politics and resign as a member of Parliament. He stated there was a difference of opinion between him and state BJP officials in a Facebook post and that the disagreement among senior leaders was “harming the party.” Supriyo served in the Modi cabinet as a minister before being replaced in the July reshuffle. The MP said that neither the TMC, Congress nor the CPI had approached him.

In response to a question on why he left the saffron party and politics, he stated, “If someone asks whether quitting politics is somehow linked to losing ministry, Since the assembly election campaign, I’ve also had disagreements with the state leadership.” Babul Supriyo was formally admitted into the TMC by Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary, and Derek O’Brien, a Rajya Sabha MP.
“Today, former Union Minister and current MP Babul Supriyo joined the Trinamool family in the presence of National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and RS MP Derek O’Brien,” the TMC stated in a tweet. The singer-turned-politician joined the BJP ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and was elected from the Asansol seat in West Bengal.
