Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), will announce his party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the Punjab assembly elections today. Probably, at 12 p.m., the announcement will be made.
Mr. Kejriwal had given a phone number last week, asking Punjabis to call and tell him who they want to see as the AAP’s nominee for the top job. He had added at the same press conference that the party wanted to award the job to two-time MP Bhagwant Mann, but he had also suggested asking for people’s votes.

The Sangrur Lok Sabha seat is represented by Mr Mann, the AAP’s state president. Even though the AAP suffered major defections last year, he stayed with the party.
After Arvind Kejriwal apologised to former Punjab minister and Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia for allegations against him for his role in the drug trade, Mr Mann resigned as party president in 2018.
Mr Mann has been referred to as an alcoholic, yet he claims to be a social drinker.
Bhagwant Mann’s leadership reputation has never been damaged by corruption. He has garnered the reputation of a mass leader due to his lack of ostentation and flamboyance. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mr Mann’s seat had the largest margin of victory in the state.

A montage of Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s imagery is used in the ad, along with dramatic background music, presenting him as the right guy for the position.
Punjab’s Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on February 20. On March 10, the votes will be counted.
